IUPUI Faculty Mentoring Exchange

Faculty Mentoring Exchange

With this application faculty can seek mentoring from other faculty, and can offer mentoring to those who could benefit from their insights, expertise and experience. Participating in the exchange is completely voluntary.
Award: This project received funding from Indiana University Faculty Affair Department.

Application Overview

With this application faculties fill out the checklist to describe the types of insights and experience they would hope to discuss with a colleague. The mentoring exchange will then offer a list of potential mentors who have described themselves as having such insights to offer. Then, it is up to user to contact any of these colleagues and take it from there.

My Role

  • User Research : Find the type of mentoring faculties are willing to seek. Also interact with senior faculties if they are willing to offer voluntary mentoring.
  • Design and Technical Work : Generate sketches(paper), wire frames(Balsamiq) and interactive prototypes(Axure). I also perform a role of an architect for implementation of responsive application(JS, Jquery, PHP MVC, HTML5, CSS3) and deployment.
Note : The project is accessible to IUPUI faculty only. Hence, under permission from the school I am allowed to post few of the screen shots of the application

Workflow

User Research
After doing observations and contextual inquiry we did multiple notes taking session and collected data for sketching and prototyping.

Sketching new designs and interactions
Based on the note taking session we sketched multiple user stories and scenarios with simple paper pencil sketches. Then submitted sketches along with "balsmiq" wire frames for approval.

Prototyping
After approval for initial design we created an interactive prototype using "axure". Below are the some of the screen shot in case the public URL wont work.

Implementation and Deployment
We started with brainstorming around the database using mysql based on the data. Then we decided to work on responsive web application with the help of bootstrap,javascript,jquery,HTML5 and CSS3. For backend handling we took the help from Professor Louie zu for custom advanced PHP MVC framework. At the last we integrated schools Central Authentication System(CAS) and Active directory service (ADS) to restrict the access to faculty only.

Testing
For the testing phase we conducted few round of usability testing and reiterated some of the design. Also along with usability testing we also performed unit testing using Jasmin.
